Marvel Rivals beginner’s tips
Jumping into Rivals for the first time can be incredibly daunting. After all, superheroes and villains are flying all over the place, abilities are being launched from across the map, and before you know it there’s an Iron Fist in your face beating the snot out of you. Phew. Let’s take a step back and focus on the important things.
Find the characters for you
Your long-term enjoyment of any game hinges on finding characters that you resonate with, be it for their lore, playstyle, or some secret third thing. Before you even queue Quickplay for the first time, get into the Practice vs. AI mode and spend some time experimenting with the vast Rivals roster until you find a few characters you really enjoy playing. Ideally, you’ll want to pick a character from each of the three main roles: Duelist, Vanguard, and Strategist to cover your bases, but if you don’t that’s okay.
Composition is king
Marvel Rivals doesn’t have a strict role lock like Overwatch 2, which means you’ll see plenty of people with main character syndrome lock in Duelists and create imbalanced team comps. While a standard two Duelist, two Vanguard, two Strategist setup might not be the way to go every game, assessing the team’s needs and playing flexibly will make you a better-rounded player in the long term.
Tap into team-up abilities
Marvel Rivals brings a unique take on the classic hero shooter formula with team-up abilities. These powerful abilities can be either passive or active, and become available when complimentary heroes are picked.
For example, Adam Warlock, Mantis, and Star-Lord unlock access to the ‘Soul Perseverance’ team-up ability, which allows the latter two to tap into Adam Warlock’s self-revive. As such, when you’re putting together a team comp, think about which team-up abilities you want to activate and pick accordingly.
Think about your role
Remaining cognizant of what your character wants to do in a game and how they operate within your comp is incredibly important. There’s no point picking Wolverine if there aren’t any melee or tank targets for him to fight, and if there are then you need to make sure you’re prioritizing what Peanut does best to maximize your impact on the game. If you’re a healer, sit back and command the field. If you’re a diver, dive.
Make use of pings
Voice chat can be overwhelming for many, but that doesn’t mean you can’t communicate your intent to your teammates. Rivals’ ping system lets you quickly get your point across, highlighting dive targets or flankers that must be dealt with. The better you can coordinate with your team, the more chance you have of successfully pulling off plays.
