You buy your weapons, you storm bomb site A, and you claim another victory in the eternal battle over Dust 2. Just as you’re about to toast your glory, however, something strange happens – you and your surviving teammates suddenly start floating into the air. One of the strangest and most entertaining Counter-Strike 2 bugs has just been remedied by Valve, which also recently announced punitive new measures to deter cheats. With Deadlock still in the works and rumblings of a new version of Half-Life 2, the latest Counter-Strike 2 update makes a specific but vital change.
Counter-Strike 2 will never truly be finished. Like CSGO before it, Valve will continue to tweak, improve, and overhaul its tentpole FPS game until, well, until there’s a Counter-Strike 3. But more than a year since CS2 first launched, it’s gradually starting to feel more and more like the shooter sequel that we’d anticipated. There’s been a big crackdown on cheaters, and now Valve has fixed a small but bizarre little bug.
Take a look at the latest Counter-Strike 2 patch notes and you’ll notice something unusual. Among some detailed repairs for weapon animations and end-of-match reports, Valve says it has “fixed ‘I have to go, my planet needs me.’” Long-time Simpsons fans will recognize the reference to Poochie, the canine Itchy and Scratchy sidekick who’s unceremoniously dumped from the show with that same immortal line. Staring into the camera, Poochie explains he has to go, and then floats off screen never to be seen again. But how does this relate to Counter-Strike 2?
You can see it in this video uploaded to Reddit by ‘HollyMartin.’ Occasionally, at the end of a round, players will start to float towards the sky in the same manner as Poochie:
Thankfully, given that it seems to only occur when the round is over, the glitch hasn’t greatly affected actual play in Counter-Strike 2. Nevertheless, it’s a good spot by Valve, and a contender for Best Patch Note of 2024.
Elsewhere in Valve world, a recent slew of backend updates suggests that something may be in the works for Half-Life 2’s 20th anniversary in November. A soft relaunch? Some kind of semi remaster? We’ll have to see.
