Annual Minecraft updates have been announced during a yearly Minecraft Live broadcast for years, but Mojang revealed in late 2024 that there will now be more regular, smaller updates spread throughout the year. The Minecraft Bundles of Bravery update arrived in October 2024, while December's larger Winter Drop added the Pale Garden to the ever increasing list of Minecraft biomes. Here's what's coming to the sandbox game in the next Minecraft update and beyond.
Minecraft update release date speculation
The next Minecraft drop is likely to arrive in February or March 2025. This is speculative based on previous snapshot and update release dates. Features can be tested in Java Snapshots and Bedrock Preview right now.
The first snapshot for the new drop was released on January 8, 2025, releasing new content into preview worlds, but was not an experimental feature. For previous drops, including The Garden Awakens and Bundles of Bravery, experimental snapshots have dropped two months prior to release. non-experimental snapshots, came a month later, just one month before release.
This suggests that the next Minecraft drop could come as early as February 5, 2025. However, if there is more content to be revealed, the wait could take us to sometime in March.
Next Minecraft update features
On January 8, 2025, the first details were dropped for the first of the year’s drops. Try saying that three times fast. And it’s an incredibly cute one. The main story here is the new pig variants.
Pig variants
Back in April 2024, new wolf variants were added, and of course sheep already come with different colored wool, cats come in a wide range of designs, and frogs were released with biome variants. This latest addition suggest that Mojang are looking to diversify neutral mobs much more, as two adorable temperature variants have been added for pigs. A brown “warm” pig can now be found spawning in warmer biomes, while the fairer “cold” pig roams the likes of the Windswept Hills or Snowy Taiga.
Wildflowers, leaf litter, and leaf particles
The other main additions to the upcoming drop are wildflowers and leaf litter, while new leaf particles add to an increasingly dynamic Minecraft, dropping seasonal leaves from trees. Meanwhile, wildflowers and leaf litter are similar to the pink petals found in Cherry Grove biomes.
These new plant types are scattered on the floor under foot and can be duplicated with bone meal and placed anywhere you wish. Leaf litter appears in forests, dark forests and wooded badlands and has a neutral appearance while creating crunching sounds beneath your feet. Wildflowers are more colorful, and can be found in birch forests, old growth birch forests and meadows.
