The Fortnite servers are currently live. Most recently, Fortnite server downtime took place for after the latest live event to prepare for Chapter 6, Season 1: Hunters.
Generally speaking, Fortnite servers only go down during maintenance periods between patch updates or when demand is increased to the point of overloading servers, such as the first day of Lego Fortnite going live. There have been exceptions where things have taken longer, like the prolonged downtime at the start of Chapter 5 Season 2 where the maintenance period was extended by eight hours.
